Sirs, To those with access to SRS:
I have a Sharps 1863 New Model Rifle
Serial # C 31882 - is it listed?
It has cartouche and inspectors' initials.
Also on the stock, a 7 pointed black star with what looks like a "3" stamped in the middle of the star.
This must be some "regimental" or unit insignia.
Any ideas?

Thanks!!

I'll take a look while you post some photos.

Trying to remember where I read of a very similar question before.

Meanwhile, care to post a pic of this?
There were two such posts. One of them was mine. Here they are:

Thanks for sharing this. If you can post some photos it would helpful for a better identification of the Sharps?

Not listed in SRS books. In Coates & McAulay "Civil War Sharps Carbines & Rifles" a couple close: 2nd Vet. Vol. Inf. C31879 Co. D, C31886 Co. B. So no hits, but at least you know what the emblem is now.

For some reason, these Sharps rifle issued at the very end of the War turn up customized, almost professionally done. Remember these rifles were given to veteran volunteers who were chosen eager applicants, and they were promised these new Sharps that were to be given to them free of charge upon discharge. In other words, they were a select group of veterans, and it makes sense they would be proud and active in post-war activities. I've seen three (one in person, two in photos) of these with many corp badge ivory inlays in the stock.
I would guess that some local GAR members or similar groups had these put into their rifles.
