I just acquired a Sharps New Model 1863 in very good shape. New to CivilWarTalk but love to collect pieces of history. I would like to find out more information, if available, on this particular rifle. I am attaching a couple of pictures for reference. Thanks in advance for any info.

Awesome Sharps rifle. The 63 was issued to a lot of veteran units such as the 6th Veteran Vols which was a late war raised unit. Its not a direct hit but C37849 was issued to John R Morse of Co G 6th Vet Vols. Look on the left side of the stock up near the top for a cartouche stamped there.

I would like to shoot this rifle a few times and am looking for some advice. I purchased some bullets from Track of the Wolf that were advertised as "54cal/52cal paper cartridge. They are too large to go in the muzzle end of the barrel on the 3 rings of the lower part of the bullet. Anyone have this experience, will the charge push through the rifling?

My first call would be to a knowledgeable person where you purchased. Explaining yours is original .52 caliber and see what they tell you about the cartridges supplied.

Neat.
Use the search function (upper right corner of the page) with "Sharps Rifle" to see what's been previously posted.
Probably many of your questions will be answered that way.
