Hi: I just came into possession of a 1863 Sharps New Model Carbine w/ Saddle Ring and Patchbox. R.S. Lawrence Pat. 1859 w/ Serial#C18136 (52 Caliber). I have attached several photographs. I know the history of this firearm and I was inquiring as to the approximate value.

You have a Sharps carbine that has been converted to .50-70 and likely saw service in the Indian Wars. Their value can vary greatly with condition, particularly of the bore and rifling. Many of these saw very hard usage before being sold off as surplus. I see some issues with it in various cracks in the metal and abuse of the stock. To my eye you are looking at somewhere in the $1-1200 range depending upon the bore and functionality. Many Sharps collectors go for these as a beginning to a collection and or as a shooter so they readily sell on the sites I visit. The presence of a functional patch box is interesting as it points to the possibility of the stock being a replacement or of it being a parts gun put together from disassociated parts. Without holding it in my hands all I can give a very rough estimate of value and that estimate should be taken with a grain of salt.

Is this a rifle or a carbine? Not real apparent from the photos but it looks like a rifle. My 1863 rifle has a patch box in the stock. I was under the impression that all of the rifles were produced with the patch box but the carbines were not.

Oops, didn't read the posting fully where you said it is a carbine.

@johan_steele is spot on with his assesment, my 2 cents. I also believe the stock has been changed, are there any cartouche marks on the stock? And if you could post a photo of the entire Sharps and what is the total length? Its very hard to give value based on photos as there are so many different thinks involved, bore, marking, etc. You said you knew the history may I ask what it is?

Welcome and thanks for sharing your new acquisition with us! Looking forward to your perspective in our discussions! Enjoy!
