Hi, I question the oxidation of iron mountings?
I 've seen full patina(brown) and shiny metal(armoury bright) on most pieces.
Is this speckle/ bronze patina just another step taken in oxidation process?
I thank you for any information.

It looks like a very nice example to me. If you look at what appears to be a uniformly brown patina under a magnifying glass it will show a great deal of variation. Also, it is much, much easier to artificially age iron to a uniform brown color than it is to produce this kind of variation. Variation is what you want to see, not something to run from.

Could you post more photos of the gun overall? The general lines overall are the easiest way to spot a reproduction. I really like what I can see in the photos you provided.

Looks good to me, like the others have said. Look just behind the trigger guard, and maybe even in the rammer channel, and you might see other letters or initials.
Thank -you again to all.
It does have three letter

initials in the channel and also behind trigger guard.
Besides Erskine Allan, the other three are unknown to me.
Any information would help?
Thank you in advance.

This thread has been exceptionally helpful to me. A Springfield M1861 rifle musket dated 1862 that I bought at online auction just arrived. The iron work looks properly old with inspection marks and 1862 stamps, and the stock is one piece with nicely tight fit on the iron. The furniture shows the expected dings and scratches of use, but there are no cartouches or other stamps on the wood. How alarmed should I be about the lack of stamps on the wood?
