I have a new jersey regiment 1861 musket stamped 1863 behind the hammer. It has a bayonet that is split where it locks on.
I have researched it. But cant find any info on the brass plate attached to the side of the butt stock with the number 8 stamped into it. Does that indicate the rifle was cut 8 inches for the bayonet or could that be a cadets number?

When weapons are put in an armory they are accounted for when they go in a weapons rack by a #. Back then there were no serial # on CW muskets so they would put a tag on them.
