1856 Springfield

I acquired a 1856 Springfield rifle with the bayonet in an estate. Wondering if anyone knew who to talk to about its value and history. And possibly where to sell it. If this isn't aloud feel free to delete. Thanks in advance.

Nice and crusty, just as I like them, and all metal matching in age and appearance - don't clean this up, I would say.
It is a Model 1863 Springfield, dated 1863 on the lockplate. There would have been a date on top of the barrel, too.
I would say it has been stored with the bayonet in place, and so aged aka rusted that way, and I would not even remove the bayonet or you might scrape some brown off the metal and make it look uneven and no longer matching.

Show pics of the opposite side of the lockplate and top of barrel. Even in that condition the VP & Eagle plus any date might still be on the barrel and maybe a cartouche in the wood.

Nothing left on the top of the barrel as far as writing.

The marks Bayonet asks you to look for are those a collector hope to see that will help establish value - the more visible and matching the marks that would be on a Model 1863, the better.

In that condition (unless you clean it up) your lucky if you get a few hundred bucks for it. Plus half the rear sight is missing. Sell it on your own since an Auction house will take 20-25% of what it goes for. Try a Military Trade show mainly dealing in antiques.
