The Republicans almost won the 1856 with John C Fremont as their candidate. Buchanan did not win a majority of the popular vote and if Fremont had carried two more Northern state he could have won the election. Fremont did not appear on the ballot in most Southern states. If Fremont had won what would a Civil War in 1856 look like? I have to wonder if the Civil War had occurred in 1856 if the Confederacy could have won. Any suggestions on the differences between 1856 and 1860?
