Hi everyone, I'm trying to figure out the threadings for an original 1853 enfield. Specifically the breech plug. Anyone know the obsolete unit measurement for the thread or at least the name of the unit for a head start in research? Thanks everyone!

Rob63 got it right. It's the BSW. I don't have a loose breech plug to measure, but this photo will get you to what you will need for Enfield screws. Brownells can get it to you by Monday if you're desperate.

Might be a little late but Atalanta Cutlery and International Military Antiques had some original '53 Enfield breech plugs and other parts. These might be for the 4th Pattern/Snider but it's worth a look. The ones I saw seemed to have good threads, just need clean up. AC wanted $23 for theirs. From what I'm seeing, these parts and guns were recovered from the Natal Arsenal that was found many years ago. British Brown Bess, (India Patterns & New Land) Enfield, (Mostly 4th Pattern) Brunswick, etc. Some were in Okay shape, others needed a LOT of clean up and some were the 3 R's (Rusted, Rotting Relics)

Atlanta is sold out of most everything. I have one from the Nepalese arsenal I got at IMA and they're not compatible sadly. Probably a local unit measurement. Thank you for the input though, it's much appreciated.

Just out of curiosity, what are you doing ? Building your own Enfield ?
Pretty much. Got a barrel that needed alot of work but had beautifil rifling. It's considered junk so I had even thought about rethreading the breech and put an armi sport one on or something but wanted to see if there was another way
