Edit - Alexander did, indeed, go up in a balloon to observe the Battle of Gaines' Mill, but that was not the occasion when he made the remark about a chicken being able to survive.

Longstreet's artillery battalion, at Fredericksburg.

Edit - I'll accept this. The question was intended to ask about his geographical position, but the term "position" could be interpreted to refer to his assignment, and he was in command of a battalion of artillery under Longstreet.
