Can anyone give me specifics about the movement of the 15th on the 2nd day. I know they were in Bennings Brigade and participated in attacking Devils den and part of the Wheatfield. And yes, I have an ancestor in that unit! William Scarboro. He was wounded and captured on the 3rd

Dang! Your whole family was at Gettysburg. :D

Here's a thread on Benning's brigade at Gettysburg to get you started.

Here's some more but there are a lot! If you search for Benning in the Gettysburg sub-forum, you can find all of them.

Another one on Bennings brigade that includes @Tom Elmore 's list of primary sources related to the brigade.

The 15th Georgia was the left regiment of Benning's Brigade in their attack against Houck's Ridge and Devil's Den. The 15th Georgia came up in the rear of the 1st Texas and ended up partially mingling with the Texans in the final attack against the 124th New York and 4th New York Battery at the top of the ridge. The attack of Benning's Brigade was the straw that broke the camel's back and caused the collapse of Ward's line along Houck's Ridge.

thank you so much. Listening to Laura's excellent lecture on the artillery explosion that wiped out the centre hill guards, I can see where the "uncoordinated attacks" failed to dislodge the union right on the 2nd. Between the 24th not staying in line and the breakup of units on the extreme Confederate right at LRT, makes since now. Benning's brigade takes devils den, Law almost takes LRT, and the delay of Woffords brigade shows just how close the day came to going a different way. So how long did it take the advance by wofford to reinforce or link up with Barksdale?
