135th Gettysburg

I was 18 at that one too. Was an absolute spectacle and one helluva week

Yeah it was an absolute blast. I slept outside and got rained on, eaten by wood ticks, sneezed my head off from the dust (First Day Battle really got to me) and it was still a great time.

I fell asleep during the cannonade before Pickett's Charge while we were lying down and I remember my pard hitting my arm and telling me to look up. The video doesn't do justice to how massive Pickett's charge was and I believe the number was 10-12k Confederates marching forward towards our lines. The sound of thousands of feet hitting the earth and the sun gleaming off all of those muskets. It's a sight I'll never forget.

To All,

I was there too, with my Confederate reenacting company, the 17th Mississippi, The Nelson County Greys, part of the 7th ANV.

My best moment, 1:24:04, as I was in that fantastic charge and I remember being told this was the first Pickett's Charge that actually came close to the real numbers deployed for that charge in 1863, ten to twelve thousand reenactors! Didn't have the luck to pick myself out in this great video, but I had been tasked to take my hit and 'die' right after crossing the fence line.

From there I watched the rest of the action and felt we had all done it 'right' and proud for both sides in recreating this moment of history.

In my opinion, there will never be another 135th of such size and grand memories!

Sincerely,
Unionblue
PS: Waiting two hours to register was well worth it!

Best hit I ever witnessed was a Reb in front of our position, G Company 2nd Regt. USV. We were right at the angle. He turned and looked right at me, I fired and he went down... didn't really elevate too much as he was about 50 yards or so off. He came and found me later Virginia guy it doesn't get any better. Said it was the best memory he would take from a great experience. Actually hugged each other. Those men put on a hell of a show

I went out after the charge and one of the Southern Guard was there and was acting as if he was gutshot. I gave him water and asked if I could do anything for him or write anyone. He said he appreciated the kindness but he would go to hell before a Yankee informed his sister of his demise.

There was a slight grin on his face when my jaw dropped and then he "passed on".

Best moment 2nd day:

Our battalion went into the woods in retreat (we were portraying one of Sickles brigades) behind a fife and drum corps, another regiment was in front of them firing from the woods. The wind came through the trees and the leaves danced in the air. The strongest cold chill I've ever had in my life.

For several seconds I time traveled.

Only had that twice. That time and then a preservation march.

We reenactors strive hard to capture that "magic moment" when we feel we have been transported back in time to that history we admire and study so much, to honor the men of both sides from that time.

I'm glad the 135th Gettysburg reenactment gave me such moments.
I had a few there as well. One of them was when we were in the Union Center, and the Rebs pushed back both our flanks, and they were getting behind us. Even though it wasn't real, the realization of being flanked brought a real sensation of fear I still remember.

Pretty sure this is "us" (Co D, 72PA) waiting behind the 69th for Armistead @ 135th Gettysburg.

I was there as well. Part of Buford's cavalry and as the infantry was relieving us on the field my horse decided to buck me off as I partially in the saddle. It threw me and I ended up with a compression fracture of L2 vertebrae. The hospital released me (with a full bottle of pain meds) and I was back on the field of battle. I watched Picket's charge assault the line. I saw my self in the video as well in the cavalry action and behind the lines during the charge... I had a great time at the 135th and glad I was there despite my battlefield injury. My VA doctor in San Diego just shook her head at my battlefield injury.... great times....

Was that on Thursday before the main event? I seem to remember an ambulance on the main field.

If I had not landed on top of my full canteen (which was crushed) and Sharps carbine ammo box (broke the wooden block inside the the leather coverings) I might not have been hurt so bad, bad enough that when you get on a horse you also sling your carbine over your shoulder as well. Just glad none of the horses stepped on me. Yeah that would have been day one of the event.

I shared the ambulance with a heat stroke casualty that had to be shocked with the paddles to keep him alive.
