i beleive it was the 13 massachussets that was mentioned in the opening of the blue and the grey, if not please correct me. i wanted to know why it was such a special/interesting regiment?

Didn't notice it in N&S, but take a look at the 13th Mass. website:

Some companies wanted volunteers to pay for the privilege of enrolling -- of course that was before any of them "saw the elephant".
