Brig. Gen. Edward Higgins (1821-1875). The Virginian had been a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. He became a Confederate artillery and infantry officer, commanding the 21st Louisiana Infantry Regiment. Higgins was captured during the Battle of Forts Jackson and St. Philip, later commanded the river defences at Vicksburg and was captured again when it surrendered. After being exchanged he was promoted and received a command at Mobile. He was relieved shortly before the war ended.
