He was Discovered on Broadway

New York City holds a ceremony in November of '61,
for the 56th New York Volunteer Infantry has just begun.
Receiving their regimental banner; then a march down the street,
while parading on Broadway, a "new soldier" they will meet.

Thousands of people are cheering - with encouragement they shout,
as this Company is walking by, a "little trooper" wanders out.
A soldier from the Company - picks the little fellow up,
and soon he'll be in Washington, this spotted little pup.

He becomes a favorite, a special friend indeed,
when battles came he was there, from duty he'd not recede.
One day he met a bullet and was wounded in his hip,
but other than his howling; he would never quit.

In camp he lived with the ups-and-downs, always loyal to his men,
he was eager and ready for duty, serving again and again.
This puppy found on Broadway, discovered a bigger stage,
faithful service with the 56th, and living to die of old age.
