It is alleged that some of his troops attempted to assassinate him on two occasions in August and September 1847, but he was not injured either time. In the more serious of the two incidents, one of his soldiers exploded a 12-pound artillery shell underneath his cot. Although the cot was destroyed, somehow Bragg himself emerged without a scratch.

None other than Braxton Bragg, a LTC in the Mexican-American War and later General in the Confederate army. On two occasions Bragg survived attempts on his life, once when a artillery shell exploded under his bed.

I remember during the Vietnam War, there was talk of fragging, which referred to a fragmentation grenade. But I'd be surprised if that terminology was used as early as the Civil War, let along the Mexican American War.

I suppose there was a plot of that nature, but I have no good guess at the terminology I'd have to use to search for the event.
