Henry Morton Stanley (born John Rowlands; 28 January 1841 – 10 May 1904) H M Stanley enlisted in the 6th Arkansas. He was captured at Shiloh; joined the US Army 4 June 1862; and was discharged for illness 18 days later. In July 1864, he joined the US Navy as a record keeper on board the USS Minnesota and deserted 10 Feb 1865 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

Edit - Hoban served in the Confederate Army, was imprisoned and released, and joined the U. S. Navy upon his release, eventually serving on the USS Minnesota. However, I can find no indication that he served in the U. S. Army between the time he was released from prison and the time he joined the Navy.
