TYPE: CONFEDERATE REED SHELL
IDENTIFICATION: Very similar to the Federal Parrott. Confederate projectiles normally have either an iron or copper band(sabot). Some (see photo) have dual, raised bearing Surfaces above the sabot on projectile body.
FUZE: Percussion or time.
FILLER: Black powder bursting charge.
SIZES: 2. 5-Inch to 6. 4-inch calibers noted.
REMARKS: Also found in solid shot and case shot. Projectile in original form was actually the forerunner of the Federal Parrott round. The Reed (also found spelled Read) was probably one of the most common Confederate rifled bore projectiles.

Now those are some handsome old warriors. I wonder how effective the heavy federal bolts actually were against armor, it seems like a majority of their use was against fortifications.

By the time of the Civil War, armored warships had reached the point where the damage from being struck by bolts seemed to be primarily internal with the external armor being pushed backwards. If the internal backing was wooden, wooden splinters would be flying around and in union monitors iron bolts would do the damage I imagine being inside of any armored ship struck by a heavy bolt would be much like having your head in a bucket with someone hitting it with a baseball bat.

Very true. On one hand, you certainly don't want to be on the receiving end of one, but on the other, you're not much safer firing it out a 100# Parrott… given their track record
