In May 1849, the U.S. Patent Office issued a patent for a "device to lift boats over shoals" to a young lawyer who would later become a commander during the Civil War. The device was never manufactured, but the patent acquired a unique distinction.

Who was the young lawyer ? What was the unique distinction the patent acquired ?

Lincoln's device was composed of large bellows attached to the sides of a boat that were expandable due to air chambers.
It is the only patent issued to a future, or serving, United States President.

Abe

Edit - eBrowne, it appears that you were on the right track. I'm sorry, however, that I can't give you credit for a correct answer, since you didn't give Abe's last name and didn't answer the second part of the question at all.

Welcome to the trivia game, anyway. Hope you'll come back and play again.

Abraham Lincoln was awarded U. S. Patent 6469, making him the only U. S. President to hold a patent.
