It all started when a theory proved valid but an experiment went awry and thusly our hero developed a habit for standing in other people's shoes. some might as well call it an act of god.
in this case he found a pair of shoes in a fictional Virginia county. unfortunately the guys in grey immediately opened up on him with cannon, rifles and at least one revolver. that revolver caused a superficial wound.
that experience made necessary an amendment to the theory in question as it should not have been possible in the first place.
under totally unrelated circumstances but again wearing a blue uniform our hero commanded a starship and this time his formerly faithful sidekick jailed him.
whose shoes did he wear in 1862 and what starship did he command (name and registration number)

a
(years later and on a different channel), Bakula played Captain Jonathan Archer on Star Trek: Enterprise. In the "Detained" episode, he is captured by Dean Stockwell, who was his sidekick on Quantum Leap. His starship is Enterprise NX-01.
