Different sources give different answers,but I'm going with "Retreat from Gettysburg" by Kent Masterson Brown.

Edit - Several players answered that the action took place at the Battle of Gettysburg, but that battle ended on July 3. The action at Monterey Pass was a separate battle that occurred during Lee's withdrawal from Gettysburg.
