On May 13, 1864 the first soldier was laid to rest at Arlington. The first was actually a Confederate prisoner of war but officially the first was private William Henry Christman of the 67th Pennsylvania Infantry who died of disease on May 11 and laid to rest on May 13, 1864.

He was Pvt. William Henry Christman of the 67th Pennsylvania and as did the majority of casualties in the war, died of disease (ironically, it was measles). He was buried on May 13, 1864,
