I was a private in Company M 72nd Pennsylvania Volunteers. My son would become a famous comic and juggler. (He changed our family surname slightly)
Who am I.

credit: @Peter Stines

Bonus:
I was a proud Minnesota infantryman, so proud that I had my name, encampment, battalion and regiment tattooed on my arm! Unfortunately, the tattooist misspelled my name!
Because of health issues, my service was short. I drifted from job to job, before settling in Colorado. I gained fame- or infamy- for a brutal crime, was convicted and imprisoned but ultimately pardoned. Late in life I took up a new lifestyle, one notably different from my past.
Who am I?
What was my crime?
What was my new lifestyle?

Bonus:
1) You are Alfred Packer (name misspelled in tattoo as "Alferd")

2) You killed about 10 men of a 21 men group of gold seekers you were hired to lead to the gold fields at Breckenridge, CO. You stole their possessions and most probably you ate them, so cannibalism was added to your list of crimes. In a second trial you were no longer accused of murder, but of manslaughter and sentenced to 40 years of hard labor.

3) After your parole you worked as a guard at the Denver Post and turned vegetarian (understandably...)

Source:

You are, James Lydon Dukenfield, father of W C Fields

Bonus:
Name: Alfred Packer.
Crime: Charged and convicted of murder following allegations of cannabilism.
Lifestyle: After discharge from the army he became a gold prospector and wilderness guide. Three years after murder conviction he was retried and convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 40 years hard labour. Pardoned and paroled in 1901 he became a guard at the Denver Post and allegedly turned vegetarian.

Question
You Are: James Lydon Dukenfield (1840–1913) your son would drop the "Dunken" and be known as W.C. Fields.
(Wikipedia)

Bonus
1. I believe he was Alfred or Alferd Packer of the 16th U.S. Infantry Minnesota
2. He was known as "The Colorado Cannibal" - according to him eating his victims although his story changed several times as to the why
3. New Lifestyle - He worked as a body guard for the owners of the Denver Post - however the most amazing change in his lifestyle was the fact he ate no more meat and became a vegetarian.

1. James Dukenfeld was W.C. Fields' father.
2. Alferd Packer was the Minnesota infantryman, accused of Cannibalism. After his legal troubles, he became a guard at the Denver Post (and also worked as a ranchhand). I love that the U of C named their cafeteria after him--must have been the same food I was eating....
