At first glance, I thought this was Elisha Franklin "Bull" Paxton but he was killed at Chancellorsville so no way he would have become a teacher, farmer and politician after the war.

Luckily for me, some very kind-hearted individual placed a photo of Philip Henry Powers of JEB Stuarts Cavalry on Findagrave and also on a family website (link below) or I would not have had a clue. :bounce:http://socialdance.stanford.edu/family/album3.htm

Philip H. Powers
In 1861 Philip H. Powers enlisted in the 1st Virginia Cavalry, led by Col. Jeb Stuart and became the regimental Sergeant Major - in time for the First Battle of Manassas. When the cavalry was organized and brigaded under Stuart Powers acted on the staff for several months until he was officially promoted to Major and assigneded as Quartermaster in March 1862. He resigned in June when his health failed him, declining an offered convalescence leave, but reenlisted in his old regiment in April 1863. Being detailed to the quartermaster department of the cavalry he served as courier to Stuart until mid 1864 when he was commissioned as a Commissary officer. After the war Captain Powers built the Auburn School and was active in local politics and church community. In 1887 he was nominated for the Virginia House of Delegates, but his (again) failing health made him (again) declining the nomination. He died on the 18th September and is buried at Green Hill Cemetery (Berryville, VA).
