1. James Longstreet

Spent much of my weekend looking for this illusive character. I might be putting too much emphasis on the gold rush being the one in California...but I am making a 100% guess because I can't find anything with what the clue is giving, especially a confederate staff officer from New York that became a colonel. I will continue to look but I am getting to the extent of my researching capabilities.
Bonus: Daniel Govan??
2nd Arkansas??

I found it!!! I want to make this my bonus question answer:
1. George E Spencer
2. 1st Alabama Calvary
Source

George Spencer was born in Champion, New York. Left for Colorado during the Pike's Peak Gold Rush. Helped to found the town of Breckenridge. Was a staff officer for Union Brigadier General Grenville Dodge. Transferred and was colonel of the pro union 1st Alabama Calvary. Would return to Alabama and become a senator after the war.

Sometimes you have to be like George Costanza and start doing the exact opposite.
