In September 1862, a well-known officer developed a large and painful blister on the heel of his left foot. Undaunted, he led his troops in the Battle of Antietam, wearing a carpet slipper on the affected foot.
Who was that well-known officer?

I was born in New York I participated in a famous Gold Rush out west. I even helped to found my own town in the west. I started the war as a staff officer but later was Colonel of a regiment that was from the south. I later served this state on the national level. Who am I and what was the regiment I commanded?

George Eliphaz Spencer (1836-1893). Born in Champion, New York, Spencer went west during the Pike's Peak Gold Rush, where he founded Breckenridge, Colorado. He enlisted with the rank of Captain on October 16, 1862 and served on the staff of Brigadier General Grenville Dodge. He was promoted to Colonel and commanded the First Alabama Cavalry from September 11, 1863 until his resignation on July 5, 1865. Following the war he practiced law in Alabama where he was elected to the U. S. Senate, serving from July 13, 1868, to March 4, 1879.

Bonus:

1) I guess you are George E. Spencer and you helped found the town of Breckenridge in Colorado.

2) The regiment you commanded was the 1st Alabama Cavalry

"During the American Civil War, Spencer enlisted as a captain on October 16, 1862. While serving on the staff of Brig. Gen. Grenville M. Dodge, he requested a transfer to the 1st Alabama Cavalry Regiment, a volunteer regiment made up of Southern Unionists, which did not have a permanent commander. Receiving a promotion to colonel, he led the regiment from September 11, 1863 until his resignation on July 5, 1865."

First Question: Who was that well-known officer ? James Longstreet

Second Questions: On this one, I'll have to take a wild shot at the answer; figuring it is better to take a wild shot than no shot at all .....

1. Who am I ? Edward Elmer Potter

2. What was the regiment I commanded? 1st North Carolina Union Infantry

Edit - You're right that it's better to take a wild shot than no shot at all, but your shot didn't hit the right answer. See edit to post # 7.
