The Rebels are coming, they're all around,
There's going to be fighting, right in our town!!
I'm 15 years old, what lies ahead?
The war's coming here and there's going to be dead.
Horses and clothing they're carting away.
Where are the Yankees, what's the delay?
A Rebel is riding my horse on my street,
soon I am hoping a Yankee he meets.
The sounds of a cannon, I hear loud and clear,
the Yanks have arrived, but I'm still in fear.
The Rebels came north, where do we run?
Where can we go to avoid all the guns?
The first day we're running right to a farm,
but there's little rest, and we grow alarm.
The wounded are coming, we must give them aid,
as I would be witness of how war is paid.
Day 2 of the battle and we're baking bread,
while outside our dwelling they're stacking the dead.
Finally they tell us that we better flee,
or soon we'll be facing our enemy.
That night with wounded, I help where I can
a young soldier asks if I'd please hold his hand.
As I walked away gently saying "Good Night",
I did not know he'd be dead by first light.
Now morning comes and Day 3 begins,
another day when I'd be running again.
This time I flee to get further away,
today's the last battle, today's the last day.
The amputating benches are scattered about,
I hear the men screaming, oh how they shout.
Twilight soon falls, there's no rest to be found,
for tomorrow will bring more tormenting sounds.
The things I saw, I will never forget,
killing and suffering, the smell of death.
The armies have left, as the dead are amassed,
but how to live on with all that has passed?
1. Who is this young lady?
2. Who was the young soldier she wrote about comforting?
