General WT Sherman.

Now that I think on it, I am almost sure I too have read somewhere that young Cump experimented with dyeing his hair, with green results. I have no idea where or even if I really read this, but it sure sounds familiar.

Then again, I might be thinking of Anne of Green Gables!

Greetings K Hale,

Thanks for the reply, the plot thickens.

Jess.

Likely places might be:

1. His memoirs
2. Brooks Simpson's collection of Sherman's letters (can't recall its title)
3. Marszalek's bio "A Soldier's Passion for Order" (most likely)

Hello To All,

The very first book that l ever read on the American Civil War was a 1960's
How & Why book. l remember reading that General Sherman as a child
detested his red hair and procceeded to dye it and unfortunately for him,
his hair turned green. Does anybody know if there is any truth to this?
Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks............................jessgettysburg1863

Of course, he might not have included that ....:D:wink:

Well, I did find something about that! Can't vouch for the source or anything but here's what I found for what it's worth! The author mentions the dye job.

Shades of Sherman by Stan Schumacher

Genealogy Digest, Volumes 16-18

"Sherman's Civil War" A highly recommended read.

Ah, here we are! KHale's right - Marszalek had it.

John F Marszalek, "Sherman: A Soldier's Passion for Order", page 13.

Quote

"Most of his youth, he disliked the color of his red hair, once unsuccessfully trying to dye it another shade because of his foster brother's taunts that he was a "Red-haired Woodpecker." When he became convinced that Indians particularly liked to scalp redheaded boys, however, he came to view his usually detested red hair as a badge of defiance."

Aussie friend,
I have read the same thing about Sherman as a boy. I believe it was in a book either by Burke Davis or Shelby Foote.
