Hello To All,

The very first book that l ever read on the American Civil War was a 1960's
How & Why book. l remember reading that General Sherman as a child
detested his red hair and procceeded to dye it and unfortunately for him,
his hair turned green. Does anybody know if there is any truth to this?
Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks............................jessgettysburg1863

Haven't run accross that one and I have read a lot about ole Sherman. You never know.

Ole is trademarked, patentented and fiercely protected. The preferred adjective is a contraction of old, that is ol'.
Ha, I was not aware of that but will keep it in mind. Well done.:D
Thanks Ted, it is great to be here everybody l have been in contact with have
been really nice and l have only been a member of the site for not much more
than 24 hours.

Thanks.....................jess.
You will fit right in. I remember back in my ol Ham radio days I had a few contacts I talked to on a regular basis in Australia. Good folks.

tmh: If you haven't already seem it, I'd recommend "Sherman's Civil War." It is nothing more than his letters to whomever during the period of his development into a top general. You get to watch him, through his writing, gain confidence in himself. Nobody tells you that Sherman thought this and that, he says it.

I will do that. When I first got into the CW in earnest I sort of started looking into Sherman. His and Grants memoirs were some of the first books I read. That would be of great interest. Thanks Ole. Ted

Sherman's memoirs were just that, and he said so. [Paraphrased] "These are my memories and, if you don't like them, write your own." Grant's are more accurate.

Indeed, I learned that after further study. That said a lot about Sherman with that quote, but he is still a fascinating character to my mind.

Welcome!

From what I understand, Sherman didn't like his red hair and was glad it darkened some as he got older. Never heard of him dyeing it! All the Shermans had it. One neighbor said Mrs Sherman never had to worry about feeding her redheaded children - all she had to do was set them along a fence and the woodpeckers would feed them!

Hi Diane,

Thanks for the welcome, l am not to sure how accurate the book was but all l remember about
was how Sherman hated his red hair which you have confirmed and when he dyed it his hair
turned a green colour. Maybe another of those Civil War tales, we may never know.

Thanks................................jessgettysburg1863.
