Parade in Gettysburg

Wilber: Beeyoootiful details! :) And that doggie is really cute! But dang it, I was really hoping that paletots would outnumber shawls for CW ladies' fall outerwear; and I see now that they do not. Doggone it; I just cannot abide wearing a shawl; I can't keep the ?&*%%$# thing on my shoulders to save my life!! But the pics are awesome; you can even see the patterns of the fabrics used in the shawls!

The details of the various bonnets are great as well. Thank you! :)

Glad I asked Wilber to zoom in. I would ask about to see if these shawls didn't have something like the old "sweater" guards--two clamps with a chain to keep the sweaters on the shoulders of the girls/women in the 1960's. Could there have been a big stick pin with a cap on the end to act as buttons... be interesting what you find.

Just some thoughts.

That's a good thought, and it makes sense. I will look that up. I mean, I can't be the ONLY gal in history to be shawl-challenged! If I find anything I'll post! Seriously, shawls and scarves give me a fit. One thing I am learning already is that the clothing I make/ buy for myself must be functional. Tugging and messing with clothing is just annoying to me and really detracts from the overall effect that the stuff I'm wearing is supposedly clothing I would have been comfortable wearing every day.

Heh, you know, to get the hoop-wearing thing right, I still sometimes just put on the hoop cinoline over whatever I am wearing at home and walk around, sit, bend, etc., so I can get used to moving in it more naturally. My apartment is not that big and crammed full of big old furniture and granny-style bric-a-brac, so there have been a few things bumped into and knocked over....! :P

I bet the UPS man gets a giggle out of that :)

Bwaha! :D That hasn't happened yet, but watch; now that you said it, it probably will!

Heh, I know my neighbors at least have gotten an eyeful, at least last summer.... there were at least two times when I came out of the building and stuffed myself in the car in full Belle Regalia. Man, driving in a hoop crinoline is a total adventure. The craziest was driving in that huge ball dress! When I went to the Reenactors' Weekend in Gettysburg this March, I stayed outside of town at the Days Inn and not the Gettysburg 1863 Hotel, where all the activities were.

Anyhow I had to drive myself to the Ball at the hotel that Saturday night. Also, I got lost on the way, and I had nobody to call and no GPS. I knew I was on my own and HAD to find the hotel on my own; because I was NOT going to get out of the car at the local filling station and ask for directions. I don't care if it IS Gettysburg and they're used to reenactors; I was still not confident enough in the garments to be that totally fearless! ;)

Yes, you called it! Look what I found online! :) I could probably reproduce that, or at least give it a try. For me, a lot of the fun is just seeing if I can actually make this stuff.

Zylphy, ma'am;

Glad you were able to find what was used in 'the day' ma'am.

What did the site officially call this fastener?

Horse hypodermic needles look about as long... just needs the pretty top part ma'am.

Horse hypos.... yikes! Yeah, those stick pins are pretty scary looking. Good defense for a Delicate Flower of the Confederacy like me (NOT!!!!!) amongst the Occupying Yankee Horde! ;) Anyhow, here is the actual site.... it was an Ebay Auction. I do want to look at more of these kinds of things, as it also looks like women used brooches as well to fasten their shawls, which also makes sense. Jeez, I seriously don't know why this didn't occur to me! Thank you for your help! :)

You will find that Mr. Wolf has the knack to find exactly what you are looking for :) No matter how hidden or lost The Wolf will find it ...

I know, that was awesome! This is great because so many of you have a lot of really solid historical knowledge. And Wilber, you do too, with the photos! I am just delighted that you are willing to take the time and effort to let all of us see so clearly into the past. I totally know what you mean, too, about enlarging the pics and having details, like the words on the newspaper, just out of reach.... It IS like History is teasing us! Just that moment (or I that guess 2 minutes, 30 seconds!) in time, just totally stokes my imagination and desire to look hard enough to somehow make them talk to me. I look at these pics and try really hard to see them in color.... like in a movie flashback where the scene starts with a static black and white photo shot and fades to moving color.... :D

Wliber, sir;

I did much better with finding criminals,crime scene evidence, missing persons, locating mother's mislaid items, e.g. keys, eyeglasses, etc. :laugh1:

I wonder of I was a K-9 dog in a past life :hmmm: LOL

The picture shows a crowd gathered on and near the Batimore Pike waiting for the parade to pass on the way to the dedication of the Soldiers National Cemetery. The direction of the photo is toward the town square. The cemetery would be behind the photographer. The third house on the right is the John Winebrenner house that still stands today and the house directly across the street behind the flag pole is the Sweney Home known to us all today as the Farnsworth House.

Thank you for that information. I have ate at Farnsworth House several times including my honeymoon. It's really cool to be able to see that part of town as it was then!!

Here is another photograph taken earlier the same day by, presumably, the same photographer. I believe the area to the right is today a motel. Also, the Jennie Wade House would be behind the photographer's position.

Really great pics! Yeah , the closeups were a nice extra; whenever I look at CW photos, I always zoom in as closely as possible... the details are what make it so fascinating for me. Just that slice-of-life, moment in time thing, you know? Also love the shots of the ladies in bonnets and shawls!

Thanks for sharing that! :smile:

Yes this is great. I have seen it but never a blown-up version. You mention the clothing. Neat that this was taken in Nov and one gets to see the styles of shawls of that era. I like fashion from differing eras. A guy question! How in the heck did those ladies and young girls manage to maneuver around with all that cloth weighing them down? What a hassel to get all that on in the morning. Also, ahem, I am not trying to be naughty but how much addition stuff would have been under those dresses adding further to the sheer magnitude of all that cloth? Petticoats I reckon? I dont know much about the undergarments of that day. That's all I will say. I wanna keep it clean. O, the bonnets are neat also.

This is the same intersection, but looking in the OPPOSITE direction as the original parade pictures (so, behind the photographer). This is the intersection of Baltimore Pike on the left, and Emmitsburg/Steinwehr on the right, taken in 1884. The building in the center is the Wagon Hotel.

And this is the same view today:

They've done a little road/intersection work here since this was taken, but you get the idea.

And this is a present version (roughly) of the original parade picture in 1863 (a little closer to the Diamond/Square):
