Parade in Gettysburg

It looks like the parade route bends to the left maybe they ended the parade in a field?

The photo below was taken by the same photographer shortly before the one you posted was taken.
From what I can gather, in the pic you posted, we are looking at the beginning or start of the parade not the end.
Check out the link below the picture also. It may shed a little light. Be sure to read the captions for the pictures.

Is it Possible that the image is reversed? i know alot of photos from back then were reversed,so maybe the people were really looking to the right.

Wait, is the parade route down the main street away from the photographer or to the left, as the troops are approaching the camera which suggests that its towards the end of the parade.

How could the image be in reverse? If the landmark buildings we are referencing are on the correct side of the road would they not be on the opposite side if the image was backwards?

Thats a good point, isn't to the left actually towards the round tops?

No to the left is towards Emmitsburg Rd. The Round Tops are about a mile SSW. The reverse of the plate makes sense. If one is standing on the Balt Pike facing north, the entrance to the Natl Cemetery would be on the right.

Wasn't there another picture in this series that shows a group of dignitaries on horseback, one of whom is believed to be Lincoln?

Wilber, sir;

Excellent job as usual and so glad you have been able to blow up the photograph as to get the details. Interesting indeed--love all the civilian lady's details, military, etc.

Bravo!

So is this correct? From this it does look like they are heading up to the cemetery...

The number is also now correct. They are looking into the cemetery. The camera seems to be in what was the old visitor center parking lot.

I have some new info about the photo that should put this to rest. Be assured my information comes from a person I trust as an authoritative figure on Gettysburg info. First, these things that have been stated before still hold true. The procession is facing the photographer. The picture is taken facing the town square. The Soldiers National Cemetery is behind the photographer. Now the new stuff. The picture is not reversed. As I said before, I thought the photographer was standing where the present day Irish Brigade shop is. Not so, the first house on the right in the picture is where the Irish Brigade shop is today so that would put the photographer where the 1863 Inn of Gettysburg sits today. The parade does not continue down the Baltimore Pike to the Cemetery but instead turns onto the Emmitsburg road then turns again on Taneytown Road to get to the cemetery. That is why everyone is looking to the left is because the procession is turning on to the Emmitsburg Road.

Hi! I'm posting this here as the "Interesting Things In Civil War Photographs" thread had apparently gotten too big.

Wilber, thank you, thank you! It took me three days and a lot of looking but I looked at every photo and zoom and read pretty much every page of that thread. It was just the best, most awesome thing ever! Really, thanks to all of you smart folks out there as well for teaching me so much in such an enjoyable way. I adore old photographs and this was like a dream come true. Great images, a good mix of people and scenic, and military shots, just all around so incredibly cool.

Totally fabulous! :)

Why you are very welcome, once you start looking at these old pictures its hard to stop.. :) When I started I never realized how much detail we overlook and just never know existed..I think the one image that really got me after zooming in was one of a minister who seems to be saying a prayer of newly dug graves while other troops look on...

Wilber,

See if you can show more detail of the ladies' shawls and not sure if they are wearing veils -- near the dog. I'm sure the ladies would appreciate the details of their attire. Might find soldier's attire details in the process.

:)

M. E. Wolf and Wilber: Yes, that would be great if you could! I am always scouring CW Cartes de Visite and stuff for clothing details, and every bit helps. Thank you in advance! :)
