To help elaborate further on what makes this a fake we have to look at a bunch of things. Size, patina, casting type and material, filing and font. Just because they are crudely made doesn't mean it's an authentic confederate piece. You'll find if you look hard enough that most of the fakes have one bent belt loop for some reason or fake inscriptions with a date. The light blue tarnish is a chemically processed aging technique. I'm including a picture to show the differences. First the size is different and the remakes are always smaller. Secondly there are no air holes in the fake buckle so it was cast a different way. The material should be red brass and the buckle has no reddish tint to it and if you zoom in the fake plate is smooth on the back compared to the real thing that is sand cast with those little bumps. The letters on the fake are also crooked the E isn't lined up correctly and the letters are off in size. Last I would say that the fake buckle has no file marks to smooth out the rough casting edges. These are some things you must look at when dealing with confederate buckles. This buckles rates a 10+ so there's probably less than 50 even known about it would be several thousands more for sure.
