Personally, I would want to read the words from the mouth of the old warhorse himself; from Manassas to Appomattox. But I can understand the psychology of learning his background before the war to understand what may have influenced his command. Still, to be fair to the General, as though meeting him and his personal perspective, I feel it more important getting to know him first and last and then what others may describe. This is the unbiased approach.

Agreed. Doing research in that order would be most beneficial in getting to know the person in question. Info straight from the horses mouth then sifted through the research/opinions of others.

See you have a revised edition of Knudsen's book under its original title "General James Longstreet The Confederacy's Most Modern General" which I've been following on Amazon for quite some time waiting for its release. Wasn't aware it ever was released so I must have missed it. Now rebranded as "The Civil War and James Longstreet: The Confederate General Who Fought the Next War" – due to be released January 15, 2022.

Have you had an opportunity to read it and if so do you feel it is a worthwhile study worth purchasing?

Don't see "James Longstreet: Lee's War Horse" by H.J. Eckenrode in your collection though it may be there.

In some ways, he was so forward thinking he simply couldn't be quite understood by his contemporaries for his logistical thinking.

In some ways, he was so forward thinking he simply couldn't be quite understood by his contemporaries for his logistical thinking.

I agree to Wert's book being an excellent start, but to get an impression of the man, not just the general, you should read Helen's Dortch Longstreet's book also. You will not regret it.

I can understand that. I found Wert's book very interesting... while I found Longstreet's memoirs "dry" in certain chapters. But overall I enjoyed it and liked comparing his account of what happened to what others have said or written about him.

Have you looked at A Soldier's General (letters of Lafayette McLaws)? It's a UNC book which contains letters setting out the McLaws perspective on how things blew up with Longstreet. Interesting stuff.

The title of the book is:

At the Right Hand of Longstreet
Recollections of a Confederate Staff Officer

I assume it's the same. But I'm not 100% on that. Is there another edition?
