Here's a circa. 1850 D. Evans & Co. manufactured Union Navy button I dug on the Yazoo river north of Vicksburg.
The site where this button was recovered was documented to have been visited by several gunboats during the Vicksburg siege.
This one still retains a lot of gold gilt on it, even after 150+ years in the dirt.
The Union navy played a large role in the success of Grant's Vicksburg campaign and siege.
It is said that the first thing Grant did when Vicksburg surrendered was to go to the waterfront and thank the navy for their support and efforts.
This was a rare thing - for the army to thank the navy for anything..lol.

Nice one. You know I'm going to ask which D Evans BM does it have as they had several. Does it have a * in front of the D Evans?

Then its this one which only came in 16mm which is either for a cuff or hat which makes it a rarer button.
