Vicksburg meetup.

Cottonlandia is now The Museum of the Mississippi Delta.

Same here, It's hard for me to make long range plans these days.

Once the organizers decide on a date, I'll try to work around that weekend.
I did not know about the name change, thanks, I will now be able to look it up for hours open. Yes I will certainly rely on the natives for suggestions as to dates.

I have a fond memory of the kindness of Mississippians regarding this museum. The length of distance made it that about the time I would arrive at the formerly Cottonlandia museum, was about closing time, 4;00 I think or so, anyway this was back in 2008, and the museum volunteer told me on the phone, he would stay and let my family tour the museum even if it was after the closing time (because we had to get to Vicksburg the next day), and he was good as his word and we did get to tour it event though we arrived about closing time. So that was real neat and anyone who is interested in Fort Pemberton and the fight with the Federal gunships will want to tour this museum.

Good stuff sir. I have a lot of interest in those places but it may be some time before I get there.

Because I also want to see Camp Moore, Marksville, the Myrtles and the Windsor ruins.
Ive almost made a decision to go to Camp Moore this week. I want to try to get there when their on-site researcher will be there.

BTW— The Cottonlandia Museum at Greenwood has been renamed to the Museum of the Mississippi Delta.

Another good Delta Museum is further up Highway 61 . . . closer to Memphis.

I haven't visited this museum in about ten years, but it was very impressive around 2007 0r 2008 !
I stop by the museum across the field by the Battle Center on US highway 51 just south of the town of Tunica every now and then when I am up that way. They have a stuffed mule behind a plow. Brings back memories of the 1940s and 1950s on a cotton plantation. It's a nice little museum with some interesting didplays.
The museum at the river park is really nice. It's more about the Mississippi river and it's route through the Mississippi Delta. Both museums are worth the time. The Battle Center is for rodeos and concerts. Built by the Battle family. Very wealthy farmers. They have the largest commercial catfish farm in the mid south along with a Zillion acres of cotton and soybeans. Very generous people. I've sold them several horses for their kids but they still charge me full retail when I buy catfish from them. That's probably why they're wealthy.

Oh no . . . just trying to look out for our visitors that might not know our summers.

:smoke:

That's exactly the reason. Someone mentioned you'd be in a car 95% of the time. Unless your just talking about the Vicksburg park, maybe. But not if you tour the campaign. I've never been on such a tour where you are in a car most of the time. Mine have always involved trekking the woods at some point.

I know I can handle the weather but because I'm used to it and know the signs when to quit. I've been on tours where people unused to the humidity nearly passed out. Once while on a tour of the Port Gibson battlefield, I really thought we were going to lose one person. It was only in the mid 80's but the humidity was way up there. Ever since then, I've alwys cautioned folks out of mere kindness. It's only fair to warn folks if it is going to be a large group of varying ages and health coming down in July, August or September from different parts of the country.

Most of these battlefields are in the middle of nowhere and are not the places to just find out how your body reacts to humidity when your halfway down a farm road and when the nearest hospital is 2o miles away!!

We might want to consider including a tour of the Mississippi History Museum and Old Capitol Museum in Jackson - the History Museum has an amazing collection of Civil War artifacts on display, and just across the street is the Old Capitol Museum which is where the Mississippi Secession Convention met. There is an admission fee for the History Museum - 8.50 for adults, but the third Saturday of every month is a free admission day.

Great point!
