I knew I could find it, here is one more similar to the NS Trader article that I picked up at a local auction for next to nothing, nowhere near as nice as the OP. The piece shows evidence of very rough handling and interestingly enough has a lanyard hole in the butt, it is a M1842 dated 1850. When I got it home I started going over it and found that it was either loaded or someone put a .69 cal ball down the barrel. Looks like it was pilfered for a lockplate screw at some recent juncture.
Talk about a wristbreaker, but I guess they were used at some point in time pre, during or post war.......most likely with buckshot.
