I made Sloosh

The first thing I learned is that cooking it on a wooden stick only creates a small torch as the fat from the sloosh gets into the wood. I also may have had it too close to the fire.

I cooked the second batch on a metal rod and it came out nicely. The rod gets hot and helps cook the interior parts of the sloosh. It tastes like bacon-flavored cornbread.

It's not something I would want every day, but I can see how it would fortify solders for a long march or a cold night.

I may need to go to the hospital and have my arteries checked. :bounce:

I was at the grocery store the other day and bought a brick of salt pork. Today I sliced it up and fried it, then, remembering Shelby Foote's story about sloosh on Ken Burn's documentary, I threw some cornmeal and water in the grease and attempted a sloosh-like concoction. Lacking a fire, I just fried it like a pancake on the stove. The way I made it was too crumbly to be a dough, but it tasted quite good. I'll have to experiment further.
