NF Top Irish Movies

Non-Fiction
Don't forget The Dead, John Huston's last film and based on the Joyce short story. Also the wonderful Hear My Song about Irish ex-pats in Britain who make the journey home in search of a legendary tenor. For something quite dark, I also recommend Felicia's Journey. And dare I mention The Commitments - and the other movies based on Roddy Doyle stories?

The Commitments is great. ditto for The Dead and Waking Ned Devine
The War of the Buttons
Children's movie: The Secret of Roan Inish
Recent thriller "71"
There's a recent movie about the Magdalene Laundries, whose name escapes me.

I just saw a terrific new Irish movie this evening: "Brooklyn".
Funny because I wanted to see the movie but my girlfriend Michele did not, so we didn't. She is from Brooklyn. She's Italian and I'm Irish so it seemed perfect for us. I also work in the immigration field and she educated immigrants. Oh well maybe on Netflix.

How Harry Became a Tree is a hilariously funny, tragically sad film about how Harry (wonderfully acted by Colm Meaney), believing that "a man is measured by his enemies," set about proving what a "Big Man" he was by trying to ruin the richest, most influential man in town. Every one of his nefarious, sometimes savage schemes to bring down his unwitting "enemy" fails miserably, or backfires in his face.

Really a wonderful little film from 2001, it is most readily available in the U.S. under the title Bitter Harvest.

A couple of years ago there was an Oscar nominated short film about a Dublin 3rd grader with a crush on his pretty young teacher. After class he asks her to marry him, and she says she can't, since he can't get married until he's 18.

Later the kid observes the teacher's boyfriend, and doesn't approve of him. He confronts the boyfriend in an alley, and tells him to leave her alone, drawing an enormous revolver from his backpack. "You don't even know me," gasps the boyfriend. "I know you're a dick head." the kid replies coolly, cocking the gun.

My favorite is Into the West:

Not so much a kid's movie as a movie about 2 kids and their father. Good acting and a touching story.
