NF Top Irish Movies

Even though St. Patrick's Day has passed, thought I have thread with favorite Irish movies.

Some of mine are:

"The Quiet Man"
"Young Cassidy"
"Ryan's Daughter"
"Michael Collins"
"Darby O' Gill and the Little People"
"Finian's Rainbow."

I thought "Young Cassidy" was Rod Taylor's best movie. They had it on the classic channel for St. Patrick's Day.
Also thought Liam Neeson was very good in "Michal Collins.

My all time favorite is "The Quiet Man" with John Wayne and Maureen O' Hara.

Of the ones you've listed, "Michael Collins" was my favorite. Even though it follows popular history, it was well-written and boasted an incredible cast.

My contribution to this is two of Hollywood's best at their best... "The Devil's Own"

The Field is a good one, kind of obscure. Well acted by the fine Irish actor Richard Harris!
My Left Foot is also good - hard to beat Daniel Day Lewis in anything. His dad was Irish!

The Informer was a great 1930s film based on a Liam O'Flahrety novel. John Ford directed.

John Ford set the bar very high....time and time again. It doesn't mean he can't be surpassed. I'm just saying he set the bar very high.

I rather liked Michael Collins. Helped that it followed my favorite figure from Irish history, and that he was played by a phenomenal actor, Liam Neeson.

The Molley Maguires was a good one of Irish American Coal Miners in the Pennsylvania Coal Fields.

I'll throw in "Far and Away". While it was your typical sappy drama, it did introduce me to the Land Run of 1893, which they never taught us about in public school.

When we think of John Wayne, we think Westerns, we think The Alamo, we think The Green Berets and The Sands of Iwo Jima.

The Quiet Man was a great John Wayne movie.

My wife and I watch "Darby O'Gill and the Little People" every St Patty' s Day (her birthday) but this one is definitely close. Funny story and great characters along with the musical score.

I would also add The Rising of the Moon, another John Ford film, from 1957. Actually a trilogy of little stories of Irish country life, it's a pure delight. Not well known probably because it has no big name stars (though Tyrone Power narrates). The actors are all veterans of Dublin's famous Abbey Theatre Company -- and true Irish 'Characters', every one. It is a gem.

"The Field" was a finely crafted movie, but way too disturbing for my taste. I just saw a terrific new Irish movie this evening: "Brooklyn".
