Confused and Concerned

If Lincoln, Grant, Sherman(mostly, supposedly), and half a dozen other famous Union folks "changed with the war" and became emancipationist, why couldn't Longstreet change? Or a little for Nathan Bedford Forrest?

I think the premise is wrong because of postwar writings. IMO the Union men's position on race sometimes didn't change as much as the accepted history purports. It's easy to write after the fact and say you changed 180 degrees. Some did, many didn't. Union officers sometimes took side with ex-confederates to keep the freedmen in virtual bondage.
So I call BS on a lot of intellectually arrogant "accepted authors". History was what happened. Not our interpretation of what happened. Many can't keep their current mindset out of historical events.
Please explain I don't understand this at all?

opinions are like something everyone else has too, and sometimes they stink

read what you like! :D
Amy! I have never seen you post in a thread like this and never discussed anything with you.
I am not criticizing your site, it is a great thing.
Many of the historians I am referring to aren't not giving opinion but are using primary sources. They just don't write about the same exact subject matter or POV as some other author. I have heroes on both sides of the war and author favorites from all over the spectrum, but I am not a dupe or a blind man.
Good luck to you and yours in all your endeavors and sometime when you are bored out of your wits I will tell you about my son, building, monetizing and eventually selling HIS internet site to fund other business.
Pete

?????

Longstreet never changed? He most certainly changed. My God no one from the south changed more. come on Pete what are you saying?
@War Horse . Sarcasm. Sorry. Of course he changed. I am saying that if Grant and Lincoln and Sherman could change, why will some not give credit for Confederates who changed? Or very begrudging credit.
And I am NOT a Lost Causer. Just trying to be fair minded to both sides. Many educated and leading Confederates had some degree of change in their POV, just like some Union men.
So I agree with you. It just doesn't come across in print to well.

I tend to be an omnivore when it comes to reading. We didn't have a lot of books when I was a kid and I was taught the darn thing was practically sacred when we did get one! :D A retired teacher lived up the road and when she stopped shooting at us she let us come and read in her library. Everything, and she'd answer questions if we had them. But mainly it was reading and reading that started the brain working. And it helped with English - at least I don't sound too much like Tonto!

Since I have joined this forum I have endeavored to read and contribute to the forums. I have for the most part tremendously enjoyed my experiences and am in no way stating dissatisfaction with the site. I just would like someone to post a list of approved authors. I get dejected when I learn that I have been reading an author that is discredited as far as our membership feel. This is directed at no one in particular but suggested as a guide. Our members are the most knowledgeable on the subject and books are so time consuming only to find that our members do not respect the authors perspective. Please don't take this as negative I just would like to discuss this.
I understand, War Horse. Members are free to discuss any authors they dislike. Interesting, too, would be the rationale for their dislike.

No you don't , and I enjoy your posts even if you don't want to exploit the mask man. (Feeble attempt at humor)

I agree but after 1200 pages it's a little discouraging to find no one here likes the Author. Believe me no disrespect intended honest.

Did the comments about Michael Korda prompt this?

Here are the reviews of some historians of his book on Lee:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/opini...a1d004-c973-11e3-95f7-7ecdde72d2ea_story.html

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/06/29/b...chael-kordas-robert-e-lee-biography.html?_r=0

http://www.civilwarmonitor.com/blogs/korda-clouds-of-glory-2014

I generally tend to ignore reviews by journalists because I haven't been impressed by the historical knowledge of journalists as a group, though there are some notable exceptions.

Thank you Cash but no it's Foote that came to mind. I loved his stories and hate that quoting him is so disrespected here. I don't even want to look back at the number of pages. I actually recognize your criticisms of Korda the more I read.
