A bit of shameless self-promotion, I wanted to share details on my book on Zouaves at Gettysburg.
Though little known today by the public-at-large and historians alike, the armies clashing at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 1-3, 1863, were not just wearing blue and gray. This work, by Shaun Grenan, looks at the formation, uniforms, and actions on the field of battle of the famed Zouave regiments at the Battle of Gettysburg and beyond. Learn about the formation of the original French units in North Africa, the epitome of American Zouaves - Elmer Ellsworth, and detailed accounts of the actions of the Zouave regiments at the Battle of Gettysburg, in places such as the Peach Orchard, Little Round Top, the Bloody Angle, and more. Continuing in the tradition of Brian Pohanka and Michael McAfee, Shaun presents a useful reminder that Civil War soldiers didn't abandon the concept of "dress to impress." The units that were either uniformed as zouaves, referred to themselves as such, or would be so designated after the battle are all addressed here, as are the seldom-mentioned militia units that, though they may not have taken part in the battle, called the Gettysburg area home. The descriptions, enhanced by Mark Maritato's character studies, which are reproduced with great color and clarity in this edition, help the student of the Gettysburg campaign flesh out their mental picture of what the Army of the Potomac looked like at the time.
