If you go to Hanover, PA there was a cavalry battle on June 30, 1863. At Wrightsville, one of the most dramatic incidents of the Gettysburg campaign took place when the militia burned the bridge as they retreated to Columbia.

Depending on what time of year you go, Hershey isn't far from Columbia and they have a really good hockey team. There may be one or two other things to do in Hershey if hockey season ends before you get there...

If you enjoy trains, @gentlemanrob , you'll want to check these out! Mr. LoyaltyOfDogs and I have taken the Northern Central Railroad's excursion to Hanover Junction, which is offered only occasionally. Hanover Junction is best known as the rail stop where Lincoln and his entourage changed trains on their way to Gettysburg in November 1863. And the Ma & Pa Railroad gives visitors a fascinating look at just what local rail service meant to rural villages in the early days of American railroading. (And you'll probably never ride another train quite like this one!) The Ma & Pa was responsible for the "boom" in commerce at the little farming community of Muddy Creek Forks, PA, and the railroad's demise essentially took the village's fortunes with it. (Be sure to visit the country store at Muddy Creek Forks, which was the home of the area's Post Office until, if I remember correctly, the 1960s!)

Lancaster is an interesting town to visit. Thaddeus Stevens is buried there. In the spring of 1803 before he set out on his westward exploration of the Missouri River, Meriwether Lewis learned how to make celestial observations from Andrew Ellicott, one of the country's leading astronomers and mathematicians at that time. He also picked up additional rifles there with the ones he had made at Harpers Ferry.
