I have been reading Don E. Fehrenbacher's Lincoln in Text and Context, and he did an essay on anti-Lincoln writings. He wrote about pro-CSA educator Mildred Lewis Rutherford, who apparently sprinkled her textbooks with rabid anti-Lincolnism. Here's what he said she said!

I went and looked at his source. One of them was her book The South Must Have Her Rightful Place In History but did not see what he was referring to.

I could not find anything like Fehrenbacher's is Miss Rutherford's Historical Notes, Vols. 3 and 6, the other source. Help?

Lincoln was neither a soldier nor a quartermaster during the Mexican-American War. He was a freshman congressman from Illinois at the time. He did not think the war was constitutional, which was not a popular opinion, and it didn't improve his political standing at the time. He took a lot of heat for it. He did, however, despite how he felt about the war, vote for appropriations for the troops that were sent there. So, no, he didn't starve them.

Lincoln introduced the Spot Resolutions, requesting President Polk submit evidence that the land where the battle occurred was American territory.

I've been looking into the Mexican War claim a bit more. According to the Library of Congress, a Horace S. Knapp was the editor of the Ohio Union in Ashland. He came there from the Kalida Venture. The Library of Congress does not mention a stop in Cincinnati, and I find no evidence of the Cincinnati Enquirer laying claim to him, either. Apparently, his biggest claim to fame was a book, History of the Maumee Valley.

I could find no Ohio senator named Thomas Corbin, but I did find an Ohio senator named Thomas Corwin (as in the Corwin Amendment) who was an abolitionist and a Whig (which was also Lincoln's party at the time of the Mexican-American War). The Library of Congress has a copy of a speech that Senator Corwin gave regarding the Mexican-American War. It doesn't mention Lincoln at all.

This is admittedly some whacky stuff, but there's a grain of truth to it. Lincoln's wife's family did in fact own slaves, as did U.S. Grant's wife's family and R.E. Lee's wife's family.

I agree, Lincoln's legacy was made a cult and she is not wrong about that. U.S. Grant also enacted as president the Comstack Act of 1873, imposing a form of censorship on the U.S. Mail, but I'm not sure it had anything to do with Lincoln's legacy.

I don't think we can reasonably expect a Southern woman of Ms. Rutherford's time and place to embrace the Cult of Lincoln, even if her facts as presented are a bit off base.

Agreed that Lincoln can inspire TOO MUCH worship and mindreading, but she is essentially a partisan for the other side, which is no better. And this is more histrionics than anything else.

Comstock was for "common decency", so its not that crazy, though nowadays it's weird. I guess it made it harder to get your "protection" through the mail

I didn't notice that. You're absolutely right.

I still don't understand how he owned slaves yet wanted to free them. He sure was complex! @peacefulanimalguy7 made that point.
