Found the below photo on Pinterest & was wondering if this truly was from the Civil War era - the dresses seem of a later period to me. If it is period does anyone know more about this Corp of women volunteers? I'm surprised that they are armed as well.

Yes, there are always, always photos blithely entitled ' Civil War ' which are not- Pinterest is Penn Central for misinformation. It's usually more hysterical because at least you have a great photograph here- and it's not photoshopped! Gosh, let me think. There's the Abe and Mary Lincoln wedding photo ( there isn't one ), Abe Lincoln strolling past a line of tents while a woman in a short skirt strolls in the background, Some unfortunate deceased fellow is the ' only known photo of Lincoln in his coffin ' ( not Lincoln and not true ) OH my favorite, a photo taken right before the assassination, 4 famous faces and Booth himself in Ford's Theatre right before he shoots! Who knew? Must bump a thread of ' Wrong'-we started on Civil War silliness from Pinterest, one day discovered someone was photo shopping Illinois's museum mannequins of the Lincoln family as the real thing.

This was an illustration someone posted as an actual photograph- and you can see where it's from LIFE magazine!

Hee- this was posted as Abraham Lincoln's parents...... seriously.

The wedding photo? 2 well known photos glued together but boy, it is all over Pinterest.

Someone even put this in a gold matt. Note the polo-shirted tourist, background to the right? Aren't people funny?

The top photograph is post Civil War. The man to the left wears a patter-1874 five button blouse (note the pattern 1874 blouse lost its trim in 1875 and this appears to be what some might call the pattern-1875 officer blouse). The man's kepi appear to be the pattern-1872 officer forage caps while the women appear to wear pattern-1872 enlisted forage caps. . Both these jackets and kepis were worn in to the 1890s. The man's trousers appear to be tailored in the 1870-1880s style, trousers in the late 1880s were tighter at the knee and some trousers were flared at the bottom in the late 1880, early 1890s. Also the blouses were usually tailored tighter than this in the late 1880s and 1890s. So I would put this most likely in the very late 1870s or or early 1880s.

While I do love Pinterest for many things, accurate captions are not something they are known for with historical photos. LOL! I recently saw the Lincoln parents in a genealogy magazine where they debunked it because of the clothing styles, etc. They use the picture of Lincoln's open coffin in Ken Burns 'Civil War' I remember seeing it when it re-aired in the last episode! Tsk, tsk on Burns
