This is Sgt. Christian Schoelkopf (spelled Scholkoff in Civil War records) of Company C, 8th Wisconsin (old abe!) vol. inf. He's from a local area where the Schoelkopfs still live. Christian signed up in August of 1861 - do you think he's wearing the infamous salt and pepper colored uniforms that fell apart on Wisconsin infantrymen in this picture? Or is this a standard uniform at that time?

To me this appears to be a Wisconsin uniform. Being away from home for the next week prevents me from adding much more information as my references are not available.

Great images.

Records show that he enlisted as a corporal 8/1/1861 and the image in the OP is of a corporal, so this is the standard state militia uniform of the time, these uniforms had state buttons as well. One private in the 3rd commented about a comrade "to show me the kind of cloth his pants were made of, put his finger through and through them as you would a stick pin". Within 10 days they were resupplied with blue denim overalls as substitutes.......

His family does indeed still live in the area. There are only 4 of us still living. Christian is my 2x great grandpa and is buried in Bear Creek Wisconsin.
