Although many Northern states issued gray uniforms to their troops early in the war, Wisconsin issued so many gray uniforms that a term, "Wisconsin uniforms" was coined to describe Northern gray uniforms that consisted of gray jacket, gray trousers and usually a gray cap. Wisconsin's first gray uniforms were frockcoats but the state soon switched to gray jackets. These "Wisconsin" gray jackets can in a couple of style, with and without trim. Wisconsin then issued 5 button blue blouses, but the state was still know for its use of gray jackets.

This causes a problem with identifying photographs of soldiers in gray uniforms. The gray Wisconsin uniforms look very much like Southern uniforms. Are they Southern soldier or from Wisconsin?
