Wilson's Creek Visitor Center

Took mini vacation to Branson, and wanted to see the VC after refurbishment. It's a nice upgrade, the ranger I talked to said now bout 65% of what was Sweeney's can now be displayed, didn't take pictures of everything, but it does have arm collection now.

I couldn't help but think looking at Sterling Prices pistol, how cool would it be to have a handgun with a bust of yourself on the grip.

Judging by the prideful way (my thoughts & words) General Price conducted himself during his last run thru Missouri, I'd not be suprised if every button on his tunic had the same bust. Humble he was not.

Great photos. I used to spend time in Republic, MO when I was employed….just a mile from the battlefield.

100+ years of forest growth and expansion can really make it hard to put the history in context. Glad to see it opens up some once in a while.

Nephew of Confederate general leaves $100,000 to Wilson's Creek National Battlefield

Albert Magnus Price, a longtime supporter of Wilson's Creek National Battlefield, died in September 2023. Albert Price was the great-grand-nephew of Sterling Price, general and commander of the Missouri State Guard at the Battle of Wilson's Creek on Aug. 10, 1861. His legacy gift of nearly $100,000 will be used to build the foundation's endowment and to support the purchase of land and artifacts, operations, educational programs, and park events. In addition to the legacy gift, Albert Price previously donated artifacts to the Wilson's Creek National Battlefield museum collection. These artifacts included Sterling Price's pocket watch, a memorial lithograph, and his revolver (on loan from the Price family). These items are currently on display in the visitor center.

Where is Prices sword? I remember I think in one the time life books that was heavily illustrated they had a picture of a fairly elaborate ivory handled sword that was gifted Price by either the ladies of Memphis or New Orleans IIRC.

REPUBLIC, Mo. (KY3) - A national park is getting a makeover thanks to funding from the Great American Outdoors Act. It's the site of the second major battle of the Civil War and the first one west of the Mississippi River. The tour road is the area that will benefit from the GAOA Land Legacy Restoration Fund. It will be sealed, patched, and paved so that everyone can continue to learn about the history for hundreds more years to come. To find out if the battlefield is closed on a day you want to go, you can check their website, Facebook page, or call the visitors center at 417-732-2662.

Hey, thanks for the info on the road/path reconstruction. Nice smooth pathways work best for old farts like me. How the needs change over the years. I used to Ramble with the Brambles. Now its important that my walking stick has a good place to be set down properly and bear some of my weight.

Saw WC two years ago and the Visitor's Center is amazing and the battlefield itself is really worth visiting.
