A National Archives search found my g g grandfather Wilson Couch enlisted in the 63rd Tennessee, was taken POW, exchanged, returned to service, only to be taken POW again!
Born in 1819 died 1868, he should have left the fighting to the young.

I had relatives in Company D. Amazing he survived prison at that age. Also unusual he wasn't discharged for being overage once the first conscription law was passed in March-April, 1862. There was also an L. M. (Lewis Mack) Couch in Company A.

You posted one of his records twice. When was his second capture? This only covers the rolls for 1862. I could look at Fold3 but I thought you may already have that info.
Also, I guess every soldier still in service who surrendered at the "final surrender" could be considered a POW for a day. Would that be his second capture?

Instead of trying to post each document in order, I am sharing a link

Near as I can make out the entries say;

April 1862 he is taken pow not exchanged.
Then Sept. and Oct. Paroled but not yet exchanged.
Next document is Nov. & Dec 62, Knoxville, I think it say's "never paid?"
Next entry is Jan & Feb 1863, says "was captured immediately after (VI?) engaement, was mustered into company April 19, 1862, has never does anything but Bounty"
Next entry is March & April 1863 ; Knoxville, Present.
Next is, May & June 1863, Knoxville, Present.
July & August 63', Knoxville, Present.
Sept. & Oct 63' Knoxville, Deserted, Sept. 5th Sand Mountain.
April 5, 1864, Deserted Sept. 5th 1863
Shows he was exchanged Sept 1862.
Oct. 13, 1862 shows him in the 77th Tennessee, exchanged to Gen. Morgan.
Jan. 23, 1863, exchanged
