Visiting the Cape Fear Museum in Wilmington, NC and was surprised to learn of the racial-political events there in 1898.

How were blacks in Wilmington still holding any political power two decades after Reconstruction ended?

We're these events (or at least their perpetrators) comparable to the better known events two decades earlier in New Orleans at Liberty Place?

Did these events get any national attention at the time?
