Reenactments are just getting started around here. So many have been canceled in the last couple of years that I wonder if they will rebound. Can we use this year's early spring attendane in states with warmer weather, as a gage?

Some reenactments in my home state were having issues well before COVID. So even if they rebound to their level right before COVID hit, some will be in trouble. Spectator attendance is hard to estimate.

Many reenactors complain that the insurance costs that many sites require, are helping to discourage reenactments. The bill for police is also a states reason to cancel reenactments.

Hadn't thought about police at reenactments, nor seen any. At least not the ones I have been to/participated in.

Interestingly enough, tho perhaps coincidencental, the only police I saw at Galena was on the reenactment grounds. Walking the historic district a couple blocks away I saw none.

I have been a spectator at larger reenactments that had a fair number of police. They direct traffic and do some patrols. I am guessing about 10 or 12 police or sheriffs. If the city covers this it is fine, but for the reenactment to cover overtime for a dozen officers cost plenty. Also paramedic have been on hand. It would seem like the spectators would spend enough money in the area for the city to cover the police and paramedics.

Some years ago I participated in a reenactment at Ft Richardson in Jacksboro, Tx. during the summer. One of the reenactors became ill, fortunately there was an ambulance on the grounds. That was the only time I had seen an ambulance at a reenactment, just parked and waiting.

At the timeline event we go to, the police usually drive true the area a few times a day.

But considering that it is a cultural event with thousands of spectators over the two days the event run.. having the police drop by is not uncommon.
