My apologies in advance if their are previous threads on that subject. I can always be directed to past threads.
So we know their where two Democratic candidates for president and they both won some states. We know Douglas and many Democrats supported Lincoln and indeed their were Democratic Union generals McClellan and Burnside being the most famous although far from the only ones.
We know Breckenridge was not intialy in favor of succession but did become a Confederate General.
We know some Democrats became Cooperheads.
So why and how did the Democratic Party implode so badly during and just before the Civil War?
